| Description |
In this talk, I will discuss the nature of free adjunct constructions with a stage-level predicate of the conditional type like (1a) in comparison with free adjunct constructions with an individual-level predicate of the causal/reason type like (1b) in the framework of the cartography of syntactic structures (Cinque 1999, Rizzi 1997, among others).
(1) a. Wearing that new outfit, Bill would fool everyone.
b. Being a master of disguise, Bill would fool everyone. (Stump (1985: 41))
I will first review some previous analyses of free adjuncts in English (Stump 1985; Higginbotham and Ramchand 1997). I will next propose to solve the problems by postulating functional projections ReasonP (Shlonsly and Soare 2011; Endo 2015) to house free adjuncts of the causal/reason type and ConditionalP to house free adjuncts of the conditional type. I will motivate ReasonP and ConditionalP from cross-linguistic perspectives by showing that Japanese free adjuncts have specific morphemes to head ReasonP and ConditionalP. I will further demonstrate that ReasonP and ConditionalP are hierarchically organized in the clausal spine. Time permitting, I will also touch on some implications for language development and diachronic change.
