Statistical Machine Translation (MT) has proven well suited for the automatic translation of film and TV subtitles. We will give an overview of our research and development experiences on building MT systems for subtitles in commercial settings. We will characterize various subtitling scenarios and discuss the application options for automatic translation. We will argue that machine translation plus post-editing may lead to substantial time savings when large amounts of high-quality subtitles are available to train the statistical MT system.
In the second part of the talk we will give an overview of other MT activities at the University of Zurich including domain adaptation for statistical MT, discourse-aware statistical MT, hybrid MT from Spanish to Quechua, and MT for sign language.
