Tatiana Nagnibeda appointed Full Professor

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Tatiana Nagnibeda as Full Professor at the Section of Mathematics of UniGe, effective 1 October 2026.

Tatiana Nagnibeda completed her PhD in Geneva under the supervision of Professor Pierre de la Harpe. She subsequently held positions at ETH Zurich and KTH Stockholm before returning to UNIGE in 2003 where she was SNSF professor and then associate professor since 2011.

Her research focuses on combinatorial, asymptotic and geometric group theory, dynamical properties of group actions, as well as probabilistic models and spectral theory on groups and graphs. Her work explores the interplay between the algebraic structure of infinite groups, their geometry and the behaviour of probabilistic models, with important contributions to the study random walks, percolation, spectral theory of graphs and theory of self-similar groups.

At UNIGE, Tatiana directed ten PhDs. Her students have received Vacheron Constantin, Henri Fehr, Edouard Gans and Piaget prizes. Since 2025, she serves on the Steering Committee of GAMMA program (Geneva Advances in Mathematics and Applications).

Over the years she organized many international conferences and currently co-chairs the Steering Committee of the Geometric and Asymptotic Group Theory with Applications (GAGTA) conference and book series. She serves on the editorial board of the journal “L’Enseignement Mathématique” edited at UNIGE since 1899. She is also Managing Editor of the journal “Groups, Geometry, and Dynamics” published by the European Math. Society. This summer, she delivered an invited plenary lecture at the International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) in Beijing.

Her appointment marks a milestone for the Section, as she becomes the first woman appointed Full Professor in Mathematics at the University of Geneva.

This appointment is supported by the Programme Professeures of the UNIGE Equality & Diversity Service.

We warmly congratulate Tatiana on this well-deserved recognition of her career and achievements.
