Shanghai's Smart Healthcare Practices Shared at Geneva Conference Empowered by AI

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping healthcare, from public health monitoring to highly personalized treatments. At a recent discussion on medical innovation, experts highlighted how AI is transforming disease prevention, diagnosis, and patient care across multiple sectors.

Shanghai CDC showcased its expanding AI-powered population health services, which now extend beyond infectious disease surveillance. Designed for different age groups, these systems combine digital twin models, intelligent data annotation, and personalized health interventions to support chronic disease prevention and management through mobile applications and dynamic risk assessments.

Among the international experts, Olivier Michielin, vice-coordinator of the CRTOH and Head of Oncology at HUG, emphasized the growing role of artificial intelligence in precision oncology. He explained that AI can combine clinical information with complex biological data, including multi-omics, digital pathology, and spatial omics, enabling physicians to move beyond traditional one-size-fits-all treatment approaches.

This technological shift opens the door to truly individualized cancer therapies, offering more targeted and effective treatment strategies while bringing renewed hope to cancer patients worldwide.

Other speakers highlighted the remarkable progress already achieved through AI in lung cancer imaging and pathological diagnosis, while also acknowledging persistent challenges. Legal restrictions on data sharing, fragmented hospital systems, and ethical concerns continue to slow broader implementation.

Experts concluded that stronger institutional frameworks and evaluation standards are urgently needed to ensure that artificial intelligence develops responsibly and remains focused on improving human health outcomes.
