Managing metabolic syndrome in bipolar disorder: a call for integrated care

A new article published in Frontiers in Psychiatry by Dr Jorge Cesar Correia and Prof. Zoltan Pataky, members of the Diabetes Centre, highlights the urgent need for better metabolic care in people living with bipolar disorder.
The review examines the strong link between bipolar disorder and metabolic syndrome, a combination of cardiometabolic risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, elevated blood glucose, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Affecting nearly half of individuals with bipolar disorder, metabolic syndrome significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and premature mortality.
The authors emphasise that effective management requires more than psychiatric treatment alone. Routine metabolic monitoring, lifestyle interventions, and therapeutic patient education are essential to reducing long-term health risks. The article also discusses emerging therapeutic options, including GLP-1 receptor agonists and bariatric surgery in selected cases.
This work underscores the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration between psychiatry, primary care, and metabolic specialists to improve outcomes for this vulnerable population.
