After studying medicine in Geneva, Alexandra Calmy specialised in internal medicine and infectious diseases. She then completed her training with a PhD in clinical research on HIV/AIDS obtained in Sydney (Australia) in 2008. Her research focuses on HIV/AIDS, the side effects of antiretroviral therapy and the response to the humanitarian crisis caused by this pandemic.

Head of the HIV/AIDS Unit at the HUG, Alexandra Calmy is also a member of the scientific council of the Swiss HIV Cohort Study (SHCS). She is a member of the Federal Commission for Sexual Health and co-chair of the Clinical and Therapeutic Group for the care of people living with HIV in Switzerland. She is very involved at the international level and has been collaborating with Médecins Sans Frontières since 1994. She chairs the clinical research protocol evaluation team at the French National Agency for Research on AIDS, Hepatitis and Emerging Viruses (ANRS-MIE) and, since 2001, WHO working groups on HIV care. Since 2020, she has been a member of the Federal Task Force of experts on issues related to the Covid-19 pandemic, where she chairs the clinical care group, and works on the evaluation of the effectiveness of antiviral treatments in case of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

She was appointed assistant professor in 2014, associate professor in 2017, and  full professor in the Department of Medicine in April 2021. She is also, since 2019, vice-dean in charge of international and humanitarian medicine.
