Martine Collart studied biochemistry at the University of Geneva, where she obtained a PhD in 1990. After a post-doc at Harvard Medical School, she returned to Geneva in 1993 with a career grant from the Swiss Confederation to set up her own research group. Supported by a grant from the Cloëtta Foundation, she was appointed Associate Professor in 2004, then promoted to Full Professor in 2011. Her research focuses mainly on different aspects of gene expression in the yeast S. cerevisiae, using biochemical, molecular and genetic approaches.

Martine Collart is also very involved in academic life, having chaired the Faculty of Medicine's Equality Commission, acted as student advisor for the Bachelor years and chaired the Section of Fundamental Medicine until 2019. From 2019 to 2023, she is Vice-Dean for Basic Medicine. As of 15 July 2023, she is Vice-Dean for Careers, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
