Health in a World of Crises and Impunity - The Lancet Report Launch
We are pleased to announce that the CHH-Lancet Commission on Health, Conflict, and Forced Displacement launched its report–Health in a World of Crises and Impunity, on 20 May 2026 and that our Geneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies co-hosted the event at the Campus Biotech during the Geneva Health Forum.
At a time of escalating conflicts, growing displacement, shrinking resources and increasing impunity, the report calls for a new paradigm for the humanitarian sector. It sets out bold and practical recommendations to rethink how humanitarian health responses are designed, governed and delivered in some of the world’s most challenging settings.
The Commission brought together global leaders and experts committed to confronting and reshaping the humanitarian system, with a focus on influencing policy and amplifying the voices of people affected by conflict and displacement.
More than one third of people in need receive no humanitarian assistance. 🏥
Developed over two years by 21 commissioners, 21 Next Generation scholars, an Advisory Committee, and partners across the world, the report draws on research, lived experience and field expertise to examine the growing gap between humanitarian needs and humanitarian response.
Four key findings:
- 239 million people will need humanitarian aid in 2026. Only 87 million are projected to receive it.
- In many crisis settings, 70–90% of excess deaths result from the disruption of essential health services — not direct violence.
- 3,663 attacks on healthcare were documented in 2024, the highest figure ever recorded.
- Humanitarian financing is increasingly shaped by national security and foreign policy considerations rather than the needs of affected populations.
The Commission puts forward recommendations to rethink the design, governance, financing and delivery of humanitarian health interventions in the world's most challenging contexts.
