Giuseppe Fiore-Donno, who passed away on 4 March 2026 at the age of 98, had been an honorary professor at the Faculty of Medicine since his retirement in 1992. He devoted the greater part of his life to dental medicine in Geneva.

Born in Italy in 1927, Giuseppe Fiore-Donno studied medicine and surgery at the University of Bari, before specialising in dental medicine in Rome and in Geneva, the city where he settled permanently in 1955. Family reasons first brought him there — but it was an entire career that he would go on to build.

Appointed as an assistant at the Institute of Dental Medicine — the forerunner of today's University Clinics of Dental Medicine— he rose progressively through every academic rank: chief resident, attending dentist, head of practical work, privat-docent, then associate professor in 1970, and finally full professor in 1973, a post he held until his retirement. He also headed the Diagnostic Centre of the Department of Dental Medicine and the Department of Oral Surgery, and was responsible for the Stomatology Unit at HUG. His dual training as both a physician and a dentist gave him a rare expertise that helped establish Geneva as a reference centre in the field. Over the years, he built a strong network of international collaborations and exchanges, further anchoring Geneva's dental medicine on the global scientific stage.

Recipient of the Ernest Métral Prize in 1964 and a Jacques et Nathalie Lebedinski grant in 1966, he was also a member of the Swiss Society of Odonto-Stomatology, the International Association for Dental Research, and the Swiss Association of Young Researchers for the Development of Scientific Research.

The Faculty pays tribute to the memory of a rigorous clinician, a dedicated teacher who invested deeply in training the next generation, and a builder whose mark on dentistry in Geneva remains profound.
