Cell division and development

How an egg develops from a single fertilized cell into a complex, differentiated multicellular organism remains one of the fundamental and fascinating questions driving much of biology and genetics. Cell division is key to this process: symmetric proliferative divisions allow cell number to increase and organisms to grow whereas asymmetric divisions promote the creation of cell diversity.

Research in my team addresses two major questions:

  • What are the molecular and biophysical mechanisms driving asymmetric cell division?
  • How do dividing cells cope with a stressful environment?
