Mirko did his PhD at the Max Planck PhD School in Dresden, and the Dresden University of Technology with highest honours (Summa cum laude), for his studies on the link between regulated hormone secretion and gene expression in pancreatic beta cells. His doctoral work was awarded the best doctoral thesis at the DresdenUniversity of Technology for 2005, and the Carl Gustav Carus prise for the best research work at the Faculty of Medicine. He did his postdoctoral work at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland with Markus Stoffel working on the miRNAs in obesity and insulin resistance, which led to him being appointed as a group leader and a Lecturer in Metabolism and Metabolic Diseases at the University College London (UCL), UK in 2012. End of 2013 he was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Switzerland and was awarded with the SNSF professorship. 2014 he was awarded the prestigious ERC starting grant, and in 2019 with the ERC consolidator grant. Since 2019 Mirko is a Full Professor at the University of Geneva. Mirko loves skiing and the mountains, and doesn’t mind some good wine.
