A travel grant to study cystic fibrosis

At the 17th European Cystic Fibrosis Society Basic Science Conference that took place in Albufeira, Portugal, a PhD student from the Department of cell physiology and metabolism won a travel grant to attend the upcoming North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference. This award went to Tahir Idris from the laboratory of Pr. Marc Chanson for his excellent poster entitled “Wnt and TGFβ signaling in cystic fibrosis airway epithelium differentiation”.

Cystic fibrosis is a frequent and severe genetic disease that impairs airway epithelium. Understanding the cellular pathways involved in airway alteration could help prevent the life-threatening respiratory infections that result from these alterations. As part of his PhD project, Tahir Idris discovered an imbalance between two pathways known to regulate normal epithelia, the Wnt and TGFβ pathways, which may promote respiratory infections. These findings, presented in his award-winning poster, open up new avenues for restoring the airway epithelium and preventing respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis patients.
