An inspiring talk from Pr. Patrick Schrauwen

Type 2 diabetes is a serious metabolic disorder which incidence is rising worldwide. As biological clocks regulate many physiological processes, understanding their implication in type 2 diabetes might provide interesting therapeutic avenues.

The PHYM department was pleased to welcome Prof. Patrick SCHRAUWEN from NUTRIM School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism (University of Maastricht) on Tuesday January 14th. His scientific interests are muscular insulin resistance, lipotoxicity and mitochondrial dysfunction in relation to type 2 diabetes.

He presented his recent investigations on the impact of the circadian rhythm in type 2 diabetic patients. His experiments on pre-diabetic volunteers allowed him to highlight a loss of the normal rhythm of mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle.
