New european project in the field of cell communication

COST.jpg

A consortium of Austrian and Swiss universities have won major European funding under the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) programme. Marc Chanson, Professor in the Departments of Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics and Cell Physiology and Metabolism at the UNIGE Faculty of Medicine, will co-lead with colleagues from the University of Leipzig and Zurich an international initiative to better understand the interactions of cell receptors with certain members of the G-protein family involved in cell signalling pathways. These receptors, located on the cell membrane, control communication between cells and their environment and are the target of many novel therapeutic approaches. In fact, nearly one-third of all drugs use this mechanism.

This EU funding programme aims to promote Europe-wide research networks and enable them to address very complex and interdisciplinary research areas. To date, more than 67 members from 22 countries will participate, including Europe, the US, Taiwan and Japan.
