Feb 23 2023: PhD defence of Mrs Marta Correia de Sousa

On the 27th of February, Mrs Marta Correia de Sousa successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled "MicroRNAs in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Hepatocellular Carcinoma". Her thesis was conducted under the direction of Pr. Michelangelo Foti and Dr. Monika Gjorgjieva from the Department of Cell physiology and metabolism.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a very frequent and slow progressing disease which can eventually give rise to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite extensive research efforts, specific drugs to treat fatty liver disease or hepatocellular carcinoma are still lacking. In that context, the PhD thesis of Marta Correia de Sousa aimed to explore the role of several tiny non-coding RNAs, the microRNAs, in fatty liver disease and liver cancer in order to open up new diagnostic and/or therapeutic avenues.
