The dual role of TIA1 in liver cancer

 

Hepatocellular carcinoma is a frequent liver cancer with few and poorly efficient therapeutic options. Recent evidence suggests that alterations of certain proteins that regulate gene expression, AUBPs, may favor the development of chronic liver diseases and their progression towards cancer.

Researchers from Prof. Michelangelo Foti’s laboratory have discovered that one of these AUBPs, TIA1, favors chronic liver diseases, but exerts a dual role in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma, influencing both the genes that promote cancer development and the genes that prevent it.
