ERC Starting Grant awarded to Ana Teresa López Jiménez

The Department of Cell Physiology and Metabolism is delighted to announce that Ana Teresa López Jiménez, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine, has been awarded a prestigious Starting Grant, the European Research Council's flagship scheme for early-career researchers to establish their independent research. She will be joining our Department to uncover how the UFMylation pathway helps cells fight bacterial infection.

"How do cells fight off infection? My research aims to understand the mechanisms that allow cells to recognise and neutralise invading bacteria. This Starting Grant will allow me to explore how UFMylation, a cellular pathway involved in cell homeostasis, can be co-opted to defend against bacteria during infection." We are proud to welcome her expertise in cellular defence mechanisms to our Department, where her work will contribute to our ongoing research into cell physiology.

About Ana Teresa López Jiménez

Ana Teresa López Jiménez holds a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the University of Seville, and a Master's and PhD in Biochemistry from UNIGE. Supported by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship and an SNSF Early Postdoc.Mobility fellowship, she carried out her postdoctoral research at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, where she studied host interactions with Shigella, a major human pathogen.
