Denis Jabaudon, professor in the Department of Fundamental Neurosciences at the Faculty of Medicine and a specialist in development of cortical network , is the awardee of a major grant from the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP).

Denis Jabaudon, together with Wendell Lim of the University of California in San Francisco, will lead a project that aims to generate tailor-made neural circuits by creating artificial synapses using receptors and synthetic ligands.

Indeed, although the molecular diversity of cortical neurons and their circuitry increasingly being better understood, it is still difficult to modify the expression of their genes according to the circuits to which they belong. However, this step is essential to repair circuits in case of injuries or neurodegenerative diseases.

In their project, Denis Jabandon and Wendell Lim will combine developmental neurobiology and bioengineering to develop a strategy to modify the genetic expression of cortical neurons in order to generate personalized circuits according to needs. This will allow a better understanding of the mechanisms that control the assembly of specific circuits and to observe this functional process by modulating the genetic expression specific to each circuit.

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) is an international research support program that funds exploratory research on the complex mechanisms of living organisms. Projects supported in this way can investigate all levels of biological complexity, from biomolecules to interactions between organisms.
