Round Table: " Think of tomorrow world: the innovation in Research "

Within the framework of the weeks of the global entrepreneurship, the Research Services and the GSI organize a Round Table on the theme: " think of tomorrow world: the innovation in Research ". 
The idea is to put forward the role of Geneva in "Science Diplomacy", in particular in the field of the humanitarian area, but also to reflect new approaches in the field of the Research and the transfer of knowledge and needs.

The 11 national research funding organisations that form cOAlition S have agreed to implement the 10 principles of Plan S in a coordinated way, together with the European Commission including the ERC.
Other research funders are also invited to join cOAlition S.

H2020 – Topics and calls 2019

The final « Horizon 2020 Work Programmes » have been published by the European Commission. They include all the strategic priorities and topics for the calls for proposals 2019. Most scientific areas are addressed. Some specific cross-cutting priorities (sustainable development and climate, digitalisation, international cooperation, societal resilience, innovation) are implemented through newly defined « focus areas » and « other cross-cutting priorities ».

To help researchers in charge of projects funded by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other US federal entities manage the ethics approval, continuing review, and incident reporting procedures, the Research Service has published a brief guidance document on its website.

University of Geneva is the first Institution in Switzerland to adopt an "International Policy on Research Data Management" and to affirm the importance for the excellence of research and good data management.

Digital infrastructure

 

A STATE-of-the-art digital infrastructure for Research
The Canton of Geneva has approved a bill to support its institutions of higher education in their usage of Research Data. For five years, from 2018 to 2022, this grant will fund evolution of infrastructure and services for high-performance computing and long-term preservation, and facilitate their use. SUCCESS STORIES

H2020-MSCA-ITN

Three new ITN projects with UNIGE participation have been selected for European funding under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (MSCA). ITN (Innovative Training Networks) bring together universities, research centres and companies from different countries worldwide to train a new generation of researchers. All three projects concern the Faculty of Medicine:
* UCOM - Ultrasound Cavitation in Soft Materials, Prof Rares Vincent Salomir, Department of Radiology and Medical Informatics
* OrganoVIR - Organoids for Virus Research: An innovative training-ETN programme, Prof Caroline Tapparel, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Medicine
* INTEGRATA - Integrating chemical and biological approaches to target NAD production and signaling in cancer, Prof Christoph Scheiermann, Department of Pathology and Immunology

H2020-MSCA-RISE

Two other MSCA projects with UNIGE participation have been selected for European funding. The RISE scheme promotes international and inter-sector collaboration through research and innovation staff exchanges, and sharing of knowledge and ideas from research to market (and vice-versa). These are the projects:
* JENNIFER2 - Japan and Europe Network for Neutrino and Intensity Frontier Experimental Research 2, Prof Alain Blondel, Department of Nuclear and Corpuscular Physics, Faculty of Science
* LIFEBOTS Exchange - creating a new reality of care and welfare through the inclusion of social robots, Prof Dimitri Konstantas, Geneva School of Economics and Management.

H2020-MSCA-COFUND

A MSCA COFUND project with UNIGE participation has been selected for funding. COFUND (co-funding of regional, national and international programmes) is intended for organisations that fund or manage doctoral programmes or scholarship programmes for researchers (PostDoc).
The project is the following: FP-RESOMUS - Fellowship Programme of the NCCR MUST and the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV, Prof Jean-Pierre Wolf, Physics Section, Faculty of Science

ERC Advanced Grant

Prof. Thanos D. Halazonetis of Department of Molecular Biology, Faculty of Sciences, has recently signed for the second time in his career a prestigious ERC Advanced Grant (2018-2023).
REPLISTRESS - DNA Replication: From Physiology to Replication Stress in Human Cancer.
The long-term goal of the Halazonetis Lab research is to understand cancer at the molecular level and then use this knowledge to develop novel cancer therapies.

The Swiss maximum funding per project is reduced to 250‘000 € if no Swiss SME take part in the consortium. Maximum funding per project remains at 500‘000 € when Swiss SME are included.

ERC Starting Grants

ERC Starting Grants provide funding to top researchers at the beginning of their research career (2 to 7 years after the PhD). The next call will open mid-September (expected date) 2018. For the Letter of Commitment of the Host Institution required for all ERC applications, please inform us one month before submission deadline at the latest.
