Horizon 2020 - Swiss participation 2016/2017

Anticipating the expected full association of Switzerland to H2020 in 2017, all Swiss partners have to claim their funding to the European Commission in all proposals (also in pillars 2 and 3 !) – according to a recent information from SERI.
Applicants to H2020 calls 2016/2017 are kindly requested to follow SERI instructions and to contact us before any submission for updated information and practical support.

Workshop on research assessment and research quality in the Social Sciences and Humanities

The Research Services organised an interdisciplinary workshop on September 14th to 17th 2016 for young researchers in SSH. The international workshop focused on methods and challenges for the evaluation of SSH research projects and on the evaluation methods applied to the careers of SSH researchers (Programme).
A “SPOC” (small private open course) related to the workshop has been produced and made available.
The project, supported by Swissuniversities, SNSF, ERC and LERU, is part of the SUC P3 research program “Performances de la recherche en Sciences Humaines et Sociales” (2013-2016). The goal of this program is to encourage innovative methods in this field of research.

Nuit de la Science

Information was given by Research Service to visitors. They could discover more about research and how to get funding.
A creative game based on lego bricks helped visualised the steps from idea to project and then funding. The challenge lead to more than 200 lego-funded projects : it also attracted a large audience with people from 2 to 70 years-old participating.

Young Researcher’s day: The Doctorate and Beyond

This event, organized by the Research Services in collaboration with the Equal Opportunities Office and the Human Resources Division, targets doctoral and post-doctoral fellows.
Questions from young researchers on the continuation of their university studies and their professional future will be addressed.
Information and advice on how to undertake, fund their doctoral/post-doctoral fellowship both in Switzerland and abroad will be presented. They will learn to highlight their assets, to develop the necessary soft skills and how to better prepare their professional career in academia or outside the University.
The morning will be held according to an information session with presentations by expert speakers (University of Geneva and companies), followed by a workshop in the afternoon, where different themes led by professionals from both public and private sectors will debate on defined topics.

Practical information and tips on FP7 and H2020 collaborative projects

The event is addressed to University of Geneva researchers and administrative staff participating/involved in FP7 and H2020 collaborative research projects or wishing to participate in future calls.
Presentations will mainly focus on the compliance with contractual and financial EC standards and audit related issues will also be discussed.

Event on H2020 Health – IMI and NIH

A H2020 Health and IMI Research 2017 event is organized by the European/international research support sector of the Research services of UNIGE and EURESEARCH. This event aims to provide an overview on the funding opportunities in the domains of health, life sciences and pharmaceutical sciences offered by the European Framework Programme for research and innovation Horizon 2020.  During this event, synthetic information on the US National Institute of Health (NIH) will also be provided.

SUCCESS STORIES

H2020 - MSCA – IF

These are individual post-doctoral research fellowships in all scientific domains with free choice of topic. Two projects with UNIGE participation have been selected for funding:
- IRONLAKE - Establishing stable IRON isotopes of laminated LAKE sediments as novel palaeoclimate proxy, Dr Ina Neugebauer supervised by Prof. Daniel Ariztegui – Département des sciences de la terre (Faculty of Sciences) ;
- MIGRATE – Mineral-scale heterogeneity of granites: A new approach integrating microchemical analysis and thermo-mechanical modelling to disclose the thermochemical evolution of the continental crust, Dr Federico Farina supervised by Prof. Urs Schaltegger - Département des sciences de la terre (Faculty of Sciences).

H2020-MSCA-ITN

The European Innovative Training Networks (ITNs) bringing together universities, research centres and companies from different countries worldwide to train a new generation of researchers. A supplementary ITN project with UNIGE participation has been selected for funding:
- QCALL - Quantum Communications for ALL, Prof. Hugo Zbinden - Groupe de Physique Appliquée (Faculty of Sciences)

ERC Starting Grantee

ERC Starting grantee call 2016 - Prof. Paul Guichard – Department of Cell Biology, Faculty of Sciences.

Projet ACCENT : Unravelling the architecture and the cartography of the centriole.
Paul Guichard obtained his Ph.D. in 2010 in cell biology and biophysics from the Institut Curie, Paris, France. He did his postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Pierre Gonczy at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland. Currently an SNSF Professor at the University of Geneva, his main research area is structural biology of cellular components.

FNS - AP Energy Grant

The SNSF awarded 4 AP Energy grant in 2016, the only non-EPF awardee is the one of Prof. Matteo Lupi at the University of Geneva. The project is part of a SCCER (SoE).
Prof. Lupi started early summer the project GENERATE which will combine numerical simulations and geophysical methods with the final goal of assessing the geothermal potential of the Great Geneva Basin.
The project will focus on the Canton of Geneva & will use the natural laboratory of the Rio Sucio Fault System, Costa Rica, as a proxy to assess the effects of incoming seismic waves (i.e. seismic external forcing) on geothermal systems.

Two new members were elected at the Research Council of the SNSF

Two new members were elected at the Research Council of the SNSF:

Prof. Alberto Morpurgo, University of Geneva, in the area of condensed matter physics as successor to Harald Brune (EPFL); first day in office: 1 April 2017
Prof. Ruth Durrer, University of Geneva, in the area of astrophysics as successor to Simon Lilly (ETH Zurich); first day in office: 1 October 2016

SNIS International Geneva Award 2016

Launch of the 2016 edition of the International Geneva Award.

The International Geneva Award has been established to encourage outstanding researchers in international studies to produce publications that are particularly relevant for International Organisations. The Award is a prestigious academic distinction specifically created to promote links between Swiss academics and International Geneva.
Professors or researchers at a post-doctoral level working in a Swiss university at the time of the paper's publication are eligible to submit.

FNS - AP Energy Grant

Participate in the development of competencies in energy research!
Assistant Professor (AP) Energy Grants are aimed at assistant professors (with or without tenure track) who are newly employed generally for the purpose of establishing competences at the inter-university competence centres (SCCERs) and at persons with a comparable position at a university of applied sciences.
The grants comprise project funds for four years, salary excluded.

AXA Research Fund

The University of Geneva is participating in the AXA post-doctoral fellowship 2017. The research project must fall within the scope of theAXA Research Fund’s overall mission, that is, to fund basic science dedicated to developing a better understanding of global risks.
The selection process is coordinated through Research Services and candidates are invited to contact Christiane Bezuchet (91023) and/or Federico Petrolo (91225) for additional information on the selection process at the University level.

From 1 October 2016, the new deadline for all funding schemes of the SNSF will be 5 p.m. Swiss local time on the final submission date. This will allow the SNSF to offer optimised support during the submission process.
