HIGHLIGHTS

Green Deal – Last Major Challenge for Horizon 2020, to be continued in Horizon Europe !

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, considers climate change as the greatest challenge and opportunity of our time. Her strategy paper “The European Green Deal - Transforming Europe into the first Climate-neutral Continent” reflects her ambition to make Europe a leader in sustainable development and climate-neutral growth.

The Green Deal is expected to have profound consequences for European research and innovation funding. Many of the newly designed calls for projects will be influenced or by this strategy, whether on climate change, ecosystems, agriculture, mobility, clean energy, industrial processes, recycling, health, or related social/economic questions.

A major call for projects will be launched in September 2020 (budget: 1 billion Euros), setting a first strong commitment for the Green Deal strategy and connecting the ending Framework Programme Horizon 2020 (2014-2020) and the upcoming Framework Programme Horizon Europe (2021-2017). It will include over 50 topics covering a wide range of scientific domains.

In this context, it is worth mentioning that the European Commission has recently launched a large public consultation on « Adapting to climate change – EU Strategy », open until 20 August 2020. Research Services organise, in close collaboration with the Swiss National Contact Points Euresearch, an online information/networking event on the Green Deal strategy and call on 8 September 2020 (12:00-13:15). The programme and registration will be available soon.

Mobility Grants : Last Calls for Doc.Mobility and Early Postdoc.Mobility

Proposals for the last Doc.Mobility and Early Postdoc.Mobility calls can be submitted until September 1st, 2020. Postdoc.Mobility will be continued as the only mobility funding option for postdocs.
Doc.CH funding scheme which supports doctoral theses and in the humanities and social sciences in Switzerland will be modified so that the first-phase selection of the proposals will take place at a national level and will no longer be the responsibility of the local Research Commissions.
The regulations of Postdoc.Mobility and Doc.CH will be updated by autumn 2020. The relevant information will be available on the SNSF website.

The SNSF funds 36 new coronavirus research projects

The SNSF took swift action by launching a special call, the first of its kind,  on coronaviruses on 6 March 2020.  The call was enthusiastically received in the research community. The aim is to find out more about the virus and improve clinical and public health measures open to researchers in Switzerland who contribute to expanding global efforts to fight the ongoing coronavirus epidemic. The SNSF responded by increasing the budget for the special call to 10 million Swiss francs. International experts had evaluated all of the applications within a month and 13 per cent of projects selected for funding.
The call is complemented with the NRP 78 on covid-19. Out of 484 submitted projects, 36 were selected for funding. Congratulations to the five UNIGE groups in the final award list:

Professor Olivia Keiser, Institut de Santé Globale Institute des Etudes Globales
Coronavirus epidemic in Switzerland: integrating clinical, epidemiological, biological and behaviour with mathematical modelling

Professor Nicolas Levrat and Dr Didier Wernli, Global Studies Institute. Governing systemic crises in the 21st century: Learning from early Covid-19 responses in Europe

Professor Anne-Claire Siegrist; Faculty of medicine, Pathology and Immunology Dpt. How immune responses shape the clinical characteristics of COVID-19: a prospective cohort study in patients and their household contacts

Professors Isabella Eckerle and Caroline Tapparel,  Faculty of medicine, Microbiology and Molecular medicine dpt. Phenotypic characterization of a SARS-CoV-2 clinical strain bio-bank and risk assessment of evolving virus variants

Professors Alexandra Calmy and Niklaus Labhardt, Faculty of medicine. Efficacy of same day chemoprophylaxis for exposed asymptomatic individuals exposed to SARS-CoV-2 in Switzerland: a pragmatic open-label cluster randomized trial (COPEP-trial)

NRP 78 “Covid-19”

Mandated by the Federal Council, the SNSF is launching a call for a National Research Programme (NRP) to advance the understanding of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the clinical management and public health response, the development of vaccines, and therapeutics and diagnostics. The NRP aims to capitalise and build on existing national research competencies, to channel and bundle them into more extensive projects, and to foster multidisciplinary collaborations and sharing of data and results between scientists, health professionals and health authorities.
The NRP will operate with an overall budget of 20 million Swiss francs and its research projects will run for two years.

EUvsVirus

On 24-26 April the European Commission hosted the virtual pan-European hackathon EUvsVirus. Over 20,900 people from across the EU and beyond participated to work on innovative solutions for coronavirus-related challenges. The most promising projects (117) have been awarded and invited to join the new EIC COVID Platform, where they will be able to connect with end users, such as hospitals, and investors, foundations and other funding opportunities from across the EU. We are looking forward to their full development and deployment to successfully contribute to defeat the corona-crisis.
