Horizon Europe – Swiss transitional measures, calls for projects

For the moment being (2021), Switzerland participates in the European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation « Horizon Europe » with the status of a non-associated (high-income) third country, the full association of Switzerland remaining the objective on the medium term.
Horizon Europe is still open for Swiss participation in the many open calls for collaborative projects, as “associated partners” in European consortia, directly funded by SERI.
Participation with EU-funding is still possible in the ERC Synergy Grants and MSCA Global Fellowships (outgoing phase only) 2021-calls. But Swiss entities were excluded from the ERC Advanced Grants and MSCA European Fellowships 2021-calls. The latter have now been replaced by national transition measures including the SNSF Advanced Grants (call open: 1.10.2021 - 1.12.2021) and SNSF Swiss Postdoctoral Fellowships (call open soon: 15.10.2021 - 15.12.2021).

Universities of Geneva and Tokyo launch a collaboration to open a new 'eye' on the sky for the exploration of the highest energy universe

A Declaration of Interest (DoI) between the University of Geneva and the University of Tokyo Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR) has been signed by the UNIGE rector Prof. Y, Flückiger and the director of ICRR, the Nobel Laureate T. Kajita. The Declaration of Interest concerns joint work towards the construction of the Large Size Telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) and R&D projects promoting innovation to build the `eyes on the sky’ of such telescopes, i.e. their cameras.
Gamma-ray astronomy will enter its era of precision with the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). Its Large Size Telescopes (LSTs) can explore dark matter eventually hidden in the Galactic Centre and powerful accelerators such as pulsars ejecting winds along the axis of the rotating neutron star in the galactic plane or black hole jets. Together with other-size telescopes, the LSTs of CTAO will contribute understanding how other compact objects work, such as black holes embedded in the core of active galaxies. Despite the impressive diameter of its segmented mirror of 23 m, and its 100 tons of weight, these large telescopes can rotate in less than 60 seconds to point promptly to the alert directions launched by other observatories to discover fast transient phenomena. Four of these telescopes are planned to be completed in 2025 at La Palma, Canary Islands, and the first of them is already taking data there for is commissioning.
The LST project is led by Prof. Masahiro Teshima of the University of Tokyo and the UNIGE has various roles of responsibility on the system engineering, telescope control, data analysis, and R&D on innovative camera.
In the frame of this R&D group, researchers working for the development of CTAO are discussing to build additional ones after 2025 for the enhanced phase of CTA. Japanese and Swiss groups have promoted a Declaration of Interest on joint work towards the construction and required innovation work to build the `eyes on the sky’ of such telescopes, their cameras.
A new sensor is planned to be used with additionally miniaturized integrated circuits that will be designed thanks to a project funded by the FLARE program of the Swiss National Science Foundation.  The construction of such cameras triggers a joint enterprise with Japanese institutions to create, using cutting edge technologies, a super-fast and low-power consuming electronics for large surface silicon-based photosensors.
The University of Geneva coordinates such project in the frame of the international Large Size Telescope project of CTA and EPFL and ETHZ cooperate in the FLARE R&D project.
The University of Geneva is the lead institution of the CTAO project in Switzerland, which is supported by SERI as part of the Roadmap process of large research infrastructures.
The responsible PI for UNIGE and Switzerland is Prof. Teresa Montaruli

EOSC Symposium

The European Open Science Cloud finally entered its highly-anticipated implementation phase in 2021. In June 2021 the EOSC was granted special status as a co-programmed European Partnership in Horizon Europe with the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding. This new European Partnership status will fortify EOSC with almost €500 million of European funding and an in-kind contribution from the partners of another €500 million. The report of the symposium summarises the current state of play of the various actions.

SCCER

SCCER : Energy Funding Programme 2013-2020: Final Report and evaluation

Developing and implementing solutions to pressing issues relating to the energy transition in Switzerland: This was the aim of the Energy Funding Programme, which was managed by Innosuisse and concluded at the end of 2020 after a period of eight years. The core element was the establishment and management of eight Swiss Competence Centers for Energy Research (SCCERs) in seven action areas.
Since 2014, the Competence Centers have developed numerous solutions for the technical, social and political challenges relating to the Energy Strategy 2050. By bringing together academia and practice, they have made an important contribution to the transfer of knowledge and technology.
Innosuisse supported the SCCERs, the joint activities and innovation projects in the field of energy with a total of over 250 million Swiss francs over the eight years.
Media release from 17.12.2020
Interview with Adriano Nasciuti (President of the Steering Committee) on the conclusion
Over 1,500 projects launched
Since 2014, more than 1,300 researchers have been working at the SCCERs each year on average. They have launched more than 1,500 projects over the life of the funding programme. Partners from business and the community have participated in around 900 projects.
Some project highlights can be found here
Interview with Gianfranco Guidati (Head of the Joint Activity JASM)
Final Report published
At the end of the Energy Funding Programme, Innosuisse published a Final Report in July 2021 summarising the objectives, activities, and results of the SCCERs and joint activities. The report was written by the experts who accompanied the SCCERs during their existence.

Evaluation of the Funding Programme
Innosuisse has commissioned the two organisations Interface in Lucerne and the Joanneum Research Forschungsgesellschaft in Graz to carry out an evaluation of the impact of the completed funding programme. The evaluation includes an examination of the three measures (operation of the SCCER, promotion of innovation projects in the field of energy and joint activities). The focus is on assessing the short, medium and, where possible, long-term impact and its contribution to the objectives of the action plan. The evaluation team is also to assess the design and implementation of the programme. The results are expected in 2022.
