Programmes

The Department of History, Economics and Society and the Paul Bairoch Institute of Economic History (IHEPB) work together to provide study opportunities at Bachelor, Master and PhD level.

Bachelor in History, Economics and Society

Taught in English, the Bachelor in History, Economics and Society gives students a robust knowledge of political economy and economic history. It introduces students not only to economic concepts, but also to the history of economic activities and indicators. The programme views economics and its development through the lens of social sciences, teaching students to use a range of methods to analyse economic practices and institutions within their social, political and geographic context.

Master in International Economic History

Taught in English, the Master in International Economic History focusses on analysing past economic, social and political phenomena to better understand the complex economic phenomena of today. It is an advanced programme in economic history, and the only one of its kind in Switzerland. While its approach and methods are firmly historical, the programme also incorporates the contributions of social sciences.

Master in Political Economy of Capitalism

Taught in English, the Master in Political Economy of Capitalism is one-of-a-kind in Europe, and goes far beyond the narrow limits of traditional teaching in neo-classical economics. The programme offers students invaluable insight into the theories, methods and objects of research in economics, and the normative conclusions reached therefrom. It explicitly includes the socio-political and historical foundations of economic activity in its syllabus.
