Multi-wavelength studies of star forming regions
The group studies proto-planetary disks and episodic accretion in young stellar objects, massive star formation, and in general galactic star formation with a multi-wavelength approach. The group has expertise in X-ray, millimeter, and infrared observations of star forming regions. Dr. Marc Audard obtained worked in X-rays (XMM-Newton, Chandra, Suzaku), infrared (Spitzer, Herschel, VLT/VISIR) and millimeter (IRAM, APEX) observations of several young stellar objects.
The "Disks around young stellar objects" group was initially funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (grants No. PP002-110504) from 2006 to 2011. Dr. Marc Audard was recipient of a Swiss NSF Professorship with residence at the University of Geneva, in the Department of Astronomy.
Dr. Audard moved from Columbia University in the City of New York and started in Geneva in September 2006.
Carla Baldovin Saavedra did her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Marc Audard from March 2007 to July 2011 (with a short postdoc stay until June 2012). She started a postdoc position in Vienna, Austria.
Dr. Andrés Carmona stayed as postdoc from October 2007 to November 2011. He moved to a postdoc position at IPAG Grenoble, France.
Dr. Francesco Fontani also joined the group in July 2008 from the INAF Radiostronomy group in Bologna but moved a year later for an ALMA fellowship at IRAM, France. He is now staff astronomer in Arcetri, Italy.
Dr. Audard hired Dr. Yuan Wang as part of the STARFORM project to study massive star forming regions using millimeter single-dish and interferometric telescopes. The STARFORM project gathers several galactic and extragalactic star formation groups in Swizerland to study star formation from the Milky Way to the distant Universe. The main physical location of the group members is at the Ecogia site of the Department of Astronomy, and we spend typically a day per week at the Geneva Observatory site.
