LOUIS DUPARC

(1866-1932)

Louis-Claude DUPARC and the exploration for mineral resources in the Urals

Louis-Claude Duparc was the third professor of mineralogy at the University of Geneva (after Jean Charles de Marignac Galissard and Charles Soret). He was "professeur extraordinaire" of mineralogy 1889 to 1892, Full Professor of mineralogy and petrography from 1892 to 1932, Professor of Geology and Paleontology from 1895 to 1932 and Professor of Analytical Chemistry from 1900 to 1932. See biography here ->

In 1900 he began to study the geology of the Urals and its platinum deposits, and other deposits in Russia, Crimea, Caucasus, etc. He published seminal ans still used works on the geology of the Urals, platinum-deposits, petrography and contributed largely to the development of platinum mining operations in Russia. He was corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. See publications here ->

Recently, Russian geologists named "Mont Duparc" a summit in the Urals and in 2014 an expedition with participation of the University of Geneva installed a commemorative stone. See information on the expedition here ->
