Paul Robertson No human society devoid of music has been discovered. If music is so universal what is its evolutionary significance ? It seems increasingly certain that human systems of music response play a key role in our individual and social development, verbal and non-verbal communication, personal and cultural integration and identity. The remarkable power of music to move us emotionally and to evoke unconscious memory also offers a thought-provoking glimpse into the mysteries of the human mind. As a product of our creativity and ingenuity, musical structures must reflect the myriad neurological and physiological complexities (or systems) of the human psyche itself. | |
