The UNIGE conducts high-quality research in a wide variety of disciplines and is one of the top generalist universities in the French-speaking world, as evidenced by its ranking in the various rankings.

Its research themes cover a wide range of topics, from the exact, natural and medical sciences to the social sciences and humanities. The main research sectors at the UNIGE are life sciences (genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics), physics and chemistry, astrophysics, as well as specific fields in the social sciences and humanities, such as history, life courses, children's rights or affective sciences.

At the national level, the UNIGE is among the Swiss leaders in hosting National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCR). A flagship instrument of the Swiss National Science Foundation, the NCCRs promote scientific networks at an international level of excellence, from basic research to application.
