UNIGE strengthens its international standing
The University of Geneva (UNIGE) has confirmed its place among the world’s leading institutions, ranking, as it did last year, 58ᵗʰ in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, whose 2025 edition was published on Friday 15 August. It thus occupies the top position among Swiss universities and ranks third nationally, behind the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) and Lausanne (EPFL).
Beyond this overall result, UNIGE stands out for its remarkable performance in several strategic disciplines: it ranks 15ᵗʰ in the world – and first in Switzerland – in Physics, 28ᵗʰ in Mathematics, 31ˢᵗ in Dentistry, and 41ˢᵗ in Medical Technology. These results reflect the diversity, quality, and impact of its research areas, recognised far beyond national borders.
This latest edition of the Shanghai Ranking once again highlights the excellence of Swiss higher education: five Swiss higher education institutions feature among the world’s top 100, a clear sign of the vitality and competitiveness of research conducted in the country.
While international rankings are not an end in themselves for UNIGE, they remain a recognised indicator, closely monitored both within the academic community and by prospective students who choose Geneva for the quality of its teaching and research.
