“Data Stewardship @ UNIGE” Project

In 2023, the University of Geneva responded to the call for projects launched by swissuniversities as part of the Open Science I programme. This programme is structured into three components, one of which concerns Open Research Data (ORD) and includes an action line “B5.2: ORD specialist / data stewardship in higher education institutions”. It is within this framework that UNIGE has developed the “Data Stewardship @ UNIGE” action plan.

The aim is to strengthen and optimise the measures and support mechanisms for research data management and openness within the institution. The project is led by a project manager (Noémi Duperron), who will take up her position on 1 May 2024 within UNIGE’s Scientific Information Division (Library).

The University of Geneva’s Data Stewardship project seeks to promote responsible and open management of research data. It is structured around four main objectives:

  • Strengthening coordination around the management of FAIR research data (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable);
  • Supporting researchers in managing and opening their research data;
  • Expanding and diversifying the training offer on emerging topics;
  • Creating communities of practice around research data management.

These actions aim to foster a cultural shift in the conduct of scientific research by encouraging access to raw data and the reuse of data in accordance with FAIR principles.

Implementing this plan requires a cross‑cutting approach involving various university entities. To this end, six workstreams will be developed:

  1. Establish internal governance;
  2. Organise thematic meetings bringing together the different internal entities providing ORD services, with the aim of enriching and updating the institutional Research Data portal;
  3. Analyse researchers’ needs in order to develop institutional recommendations;
  4. Organise events and a mailing list serving as a communication channel for the ORD community;
  5. Ensure the long‑term sustainability of the actions undertaken during the project;
  6. Contribute to the development of the Data Stewardship CAS set up by UNIL (SwissDS‑ENV).
