Hollow shaft initials

These are initials in geometric style. The body of the letter encloses rectangular compartments, decorated with foliated, floral or abstract elements; the extremities of the strokes may be decorated with interlaced knots and foliated clusters.
The hollow shaft initials are typical of the earliest Atlantic Bibles, produced in the second half of the 11th century in the region of Rome and in Umbria.
