The Master of Theology is a 120-credit programme offered jointly by the University of Geneva and the University of Lausanne (AZUR Formation). In order to satisfy the increasing demand for flexibility, this Master can be attend in person or a distance thanks to e-learning courses: students can decide whether to take each course in person or in a distance via one interactive internet platform.
The Master's degree aim to acquire in-depth, specialized knowledge and skills in theology from a generalist perspective. Out of the 7 areas of study in theology, students select 6 and complete a programme of 12 credits within each area.
With the 18 remaining elective course credits, students can reinforce their general training in theology (for example via courses in the 7th area) or specialise in one or two of the proposed areas of study.

A Bachelor of Theology or equivalent degree.
If the Bachelor's degree obtained is not attached to the "theology" branch of study, an upgrade of up to 60 credits is required.
Enrolment at one of the two faculties of theology (Geneva or Lausanne).

Deadline for Fall Semester for candidates that hold a foreign bachelor's degree: 28 February 2026
(30 April 2026 for candidates that hold a Swiss bachelor's degree at the start of the next academic year AND, according to their nationality, are not subject to a visa for entry into Switzerland for more than 90 days, according to Swiss government requirements and regardless of their current place of residence, or for candidates holding a Swiss residence permit that is valid beyond 30 April.)

Students may go on exchange regardless of how many credits they have completed at the Faculty. Students may earn no more than 45 credits (or spend no more than two semesters) on exchange.

A Master of Theology leads to a number of opportunities in a variety of fields, such as: academic research (doctorate, post-doctorate), ecclesiastical professions (ministry, chaplaincy), social services (marriage counsellor, care, support), the media (journalism, communications), government and non-governmental organisations, the book industry (publishing, bookshops).
