Publication Fund: new eligibility criteria

Established in 2018 by the University Rectorate as part of the Swiss National Open Access Strategy (revised in 2024), the Publication Fund has, over the past seven years, supported more than 420 open access publications, including articles, book chapters, and monographs, for a total amount of nearly CHF 692,000.

Initially launched as a pilot project from 2018 to 2021, the Fund was later strengthened through co-funding of up to CHF 200,000 in 2023 from the swissuniversities National OA Fund project, which ran from 2022 to 2024.

As of January 1, 2025, this national project came to an end, reducing the available budget to CHF 130,000, funded exclusively from the UNIGE Library. This entire amount was fully allocated by the end of November 2025, supporting approximately sixty open access publications.

In 2026, the University reaffirms its commitment to open access publishing while acknowledging current budgetary constraints. The UNIGE Library therefore maintains the Publication Fund with a reduced allocation of CHF 40,000. As a result, eligibility criteria have been revised. The fund is now open exclusively to early-career researchers at UNIGE working in the humanities and social sciences, fields that are less well covered by Read & Publish agreements.

Further details of the revised eligibility criteria, as well as contact information for any questions, can be found on this page.
