G7 Summit: internal organisation and measures

The G7 Summit will take place in Evian-les-Bains from 15 to 17 June. In this context, the Geneva and French authorities will implement significant security and border control measures, which will affect travel throughout the cross-border region. The cantonal authorities therefore recommend anticipating travel arrangements and, where possible, making greater use of remote working.

This page lists the concrete measures affecting the University and will be updated as the situation evolves.

Mobility

From 12 to 18 June 2026, a number of crossing points between Geneva and France will be closed and border checks reinforced. Traffic disruptions and delays are to be expected, particularly on certain roads and motorways leading to the French border. Public transport services will continue to operate throughout the period concerned, although some routes, especially cross-border services, may experience occasional disruptions.

Remote work

For the period from 12 to 18 June 2026, staff members whose duties allow are therefore invited to prioritise remote working, in agreement with their hierarchies and subject to service requirements, while all institutional activities continue as normal. During this period, and wherever possible, remote meetings should also be prioritised.

Staff members residing in France who do not hold Swiss nationality remain subject to the addendum to the double taxation agreement and must comply with the threshold limits set out in the legal framework.

Border crossing

A pass system has been introduced by the Council of State. It allows smoother priority access for essential staff working in critical services and infrastructures.

Even without a pass, crossing the border remains possible for everyone, although significant delays and route changes should be expected. Presence on site should be limited to situations where remote work does not allow the institution’s tasks to be carried out, while the institution itself continues to operate normally.

Exams

The organization of the examination session falls under the responsibility of the faculties and interfaculty centers, which communicate the arrangements directly to the students concerned. In most cases, examinations will be completed by June 12.

People taking an exam between June 12 and June 18 are encouraged to anticipate travel difficulties, particularly regarding border crossings, by allowing for a significant time margin and checking possible routes in advance. They are asked to follow the instructions provided by their faculty and to contact it directly if needed.

Events

The University is observing a moratorium on events open to the public and will neither organize nor host such events from 12 to 18 June 2026. Alternative dates may be offered to organizers before or after this period, subject to venue availability. Neither working meetings nor the ordinary academic activities essential to the institution’s operations and conducted by it are affected by this moratorium. However, it does apply to all events falling outside this definition, including those intended exclusively for the university community.

Official information

The authorities provide an information platform on the G7 that brings together, as comprehensively as possible, communications issued by the various Swiss and French governmental bodies.
