Publication of report advocating for safe and fair mining operations

The World Economic Forum has released a report, prepared in collaboration with the Geneva Center for Business and Human Rights, advocating for safe and fair mining operations.

The paper: “Making Mining Safe and Fair: Artisanal cobalt extraction in the Democratic Republic of the Congo”, is an independent expert assessment based on Prof. Dorothée Baumann-Pauly’s review of cobalt-producing mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The goal of the assessment was to identify actions that could eliminate violations of human rights and the use of child labor in sourcing cobalt in the country. In her assessment, Prof. Baumann-Pauly emphasizes the importance of formalizing artisanal small-scale mining practices. She calls for the commitment of all stakeholders to a common standard for responsible cobalt sourcing.

> Campus, the scientific magazine of the University of Geneva, reported on Prof. Baumann-Pauly's trip to the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo: In the cobalt mines of Kolwezi.
