The SWISS SUBS project started in 2018 as a cooperation between Alexander Künzli (Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, University of Geneva) and Elisabeth Stark (Institute of Romance Studies, University of Zurich). Sponsored by the University of Geneva – University of Zurich Joint Seed Funding, they brought together experts in translation studies, linguistics, neuropsychology and ergonomics to study subtitling and subtitles in the Swiss context. The SWISS SUBS project explores three perspectives: (1) the process (the subtitler’s workplace); (2) the product (interlingual and intralingual subtitles as result of this process); (3) reception (comprehension and subtitle processing effort). The overall goal of the SWISS SUBS project is to contribute to increasing subtitling productivity, optimizing subtitle quality, and enhancing audience satisfaction. It will also produce large-scale open source resources for research into all four Swiss national languages (German, French, Italian and Romansh).
