The Art History Unit focuses on teaching themes in the Western and especially European cultural area, from Antiquity to the present day. Two course loads and two teaching loads offer important extensions in the field of Asian art or Islamic art, while covering current fields such as the history of photography and the moving image. This exceptionally wide range of courses, unrivalled in Western Switzerland, is a strong point of art history at the University of Geneva.
The courses cover the production, reception and conservation of objects, as well as their interpretation from a resolutely interdisciplinary perspective. Students are invited to examine original works of art in Geneva, the French-speaking part of Switzerland and abroad, as part of their courses and study trips. Questioning and critiquing the theories that have conditioned the production of these artworks and the methods of traditional and modern art history are encouraged, in order to forge one's own tools for understanding and analyzing the works.
