Classical archaeology studies the material remains of the Mediterranean civilisations of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, stretching from the Neolithic period up to the end of the Roman Empire. It covers fields such as architecture, sculpture, ceramics and painting, with an emphasis on the study of related objects. Digs are also an integral part of the programme. The Classical Archaeology Unit is actively involved in the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece (ESAG) and in Italy. Knowledge of Greek and Latin is not required at the Bachelor's level, but at least one of these languages is required at the Master's level.
