This programme focuses on the study of English language and literature within very diverse historical, geographical and cultural contexts, from the origins of the English language to contemporary literature. In the linguistic classes, students will look at the structure, use and historical development of the English language, while the literature classes cover human expression in a range of literary genres and broad cultural contexts. Students will study a range of classic works by authors such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson and James Joyce, as well as works that question and transform that tradition by relating the experiences of migrants, and marginalised and emerging groups against the backdrop of colonialisation and globalisation.
1.5 years (3 semesters)
Except for disciplines involving modern languages (Spanish, Italian, English and German), where courses are offered in the relevant language.
