The German Department offers a comprehensive programme covering modern literature, medieval literature and linguistics. Students will study literature from the 8th century up to the 21st century, with a focus on textual analysis within historical, social and cultural contexts and on manuscripts and images. In linguistics courses, students will take a descriptive approach that takes account of historical, regional, sociolinguistic and stylistic diversity. A large proportion of students are non-native German speakers, there is a particular focus on studying German as a foreign language, with targeted language classes.
