Students cannot understand the origins of western civilisation without knowledge of the history of ancient Mesopotamia. It was where towns, states and writing took shape, at the end of the fourth millennium BC. It was, for a long time, a multilingual region. The programme taught by the Languages and Civilisation of Mesopotamia Unit provides an introduction to Akkadian and then Sumerian, giving students direct access to a range of legal, epistolary, administrative and historical texts and other key works such as the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Atra-Hasis ('exceedingly wise'). The programme also covers Mesopotamian history, archaeology and civilisation from around 4,000 BC up to the Greek conquest.
