Since the Book of Genesis and the myth of the Tower of Babel, one of the great questions of humanity has centred on the language ability unique to humans and the reasons for its diverse forms. Where does our language ability come from? Why are there so many different languages? How and why do languages evolve? How do languages allow us to express meaning and communicate? What is the relationship between language and thinking? Students address these questions by studying the various fields of linguistics – syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse theory and language acquisition.
