Objectives
Founded in January 2022 by the UNESCO Chair for the Protection of Cultural Property in International Law with the support of the University Board of Directors, the International Platform for Diplomacy in Cultural Heritage aims to overcome the challenges that arise in the process of repatriating items of cultural heritage. Its main goals are to promote alternative dispute resolutions to settle issues of ownership, facilitate dialogue and international collaboration among states, communities, and individuals regarding movable objects of cultural heritage, and provide just and equitable solutions to resolve these delicate matters.
The Platform was established by Honorary Professor Marc-André Renold, the former director of the Art-Law Centre and presently UNESCO Co-Chair, with the support of the Chancellor’s Office of the University. The Platform’s activities are carried out alongside the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, with which it signed a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2023.
