How does it work?

Currently, the Platform facilitates the voluntary restitution of cultural property to its country or community of origin. The Platform intervenes at the request of individuals in possession of items of cultural heritage that are likely to have been stolen, dispossessed, or illicitly trafficked, even if they were not directly responsible for their spoliation. Faced with this dilemma, these individuals may seek guidance from the Platform in order to abide by new ethical standards according to the object’s provenance. The Platform will thus advise them on the steps they should take to return the object to its rightful owner.

To carry out these activities, the Platform must ensure the authenticity of each object to be returned. Thus, the Platform will help individuals whose provenance records are incomplete to obtain missing information about the objects in their collections, announce the existence of these objects to the appropriate channels, and take steps to prevent and resolve any potential disputes, with the ultimate goal of respecting the perspectives of their communities of origin.
