Teachers

Our laboratory offers workshops for teachers on children's cognitive development and/or learning strategies. These workshops consist of two parts: a theoretical part and a practical part.

Workshop Child cognitive development

In the theoretical part, an introduction is given on cognitive development, memory development, working memory development, and how working memory limitations influence behavior and learning in the classroom.

In the practical part, teachers work on concrete examples to analyze the working memory load of different situations and tasks, identify behaviors that might reflect low working memory capacity, and reflect on how to address classroom challenges related to working memory functioning and overload.

Workshop Understanding memory to boost learning

In the theoretical part, current knowledge on memory is presented, to derive practical applications in teaching. Short-term and long-term memory, how they function, their capacities, and how they evolve over a lifetime are discussed. The crucial role of attention and effective memory strategies are discussed. Practical tips for improving students' retention of information are offered, providing participants with concrete ways to optimize learning in school.

In the practical part, teachers work on concrete examples describing “typical” classroom situations, helping to illustrate and understand how/why memorization can be problematic, even in the absence of clinical conditions, and how to remedy them.
