Mentoring

ARE YOU A STUDENT? WHY NOT BECOME A MENTOR?

From the very beginning, Horizon académique set up the mentoring system which aims to bring together student mentors from the University and participants of the programme. For the third year, the mentoring system is expanding and now welcomes participants and mentors in Geneva's Universities and Universites of Applied Sciences!

What is mentoring at Horizon académique ?

Mentoring is above all a relationship of mutual enrichment based on listening and horizontality. It means learning from the participants in the programme, whether it be their unusual background, their professional experience or their philosophy. More concretely, it is about being a support within the higher education institution, and making them more welcoming and open to the diversity offered by migration.

In other words,

  • communicating information about your field of study/faculty, providing support in choosing courses, and acting as a point of contact and advice in the normal student process.
  • actively participate in workshops, sessions and events organised by the programme for participants on an ad hoc basis throughout the year (registration session, training in digital tools, etc.). This involves accompanying participants in these workshops, sharing your experience and ideas. It is also possible to organise workshops independently and in consultation with the participants.
  • participate in ad hoc projects proposed by one-off or long-standing collaborations such as podcasts, round tables, conferences, etc.

Training

Why participate in training courses? Because becoming a mentor cannot be improvised!

In order to give you the necessary tools to accompany participants in the best possible way, we organise trainings and conferences throughout the year. The speakers are active in the field of asylum/migration and can help you to have a better understanding of the issues related to migration.

Horizon académique Community

By becoming a mentor for the Horizon académique programme, you become part of a community whose main objective is to give a "helping hand" to people in the asylum field and other populations with similar needs.

The Horizon académique programme seeks to create a synergy between the different members of its community so that by combining our skills we can find solutions to integrate people from different backgrounds more easily.

Registration for the year 2022-2023 ARE CLOSED !

TESTIMONIALS

“Being an Horizon académique mentor allows you to build a relationship with a migrant student.  As I had been a student at the University of Geneva for two years, I was able to help my mentee do just what his Faculty needed him to. I encourage other students to become mentors as well.” (Clément Magnenat, law student, 2016–2017 mentor)

“Being a mentor helps me see the world through the eyes of refugees in a host country. I am able to actively participate in their integration by trying my best to assist them as they resume their studies.  The programme allows me to put my studies and how I would like to contribute to the world into perspective, and it emphasizes the importance of having to change the way we see things.” (Mathilde Brault, psychology student, 2019–2020 mentor)

"During the first weeks I was quite stressed, because I was wondering if I was "legitimate" to help them. I also had doubts about my knowledge, because I didn't know if I could answer all their questions. What a surprise for us to discover that our two participants were two young men full of goodwill and kindness.  My experience in this programme was enriching, human and allowed me to participate in a relationship based on respect and openness. While I have provided help, knowledge and support to these people, I have also received a lot of gratitude, smiles and sharing. In the Horizon académique programme, I got to know the participants and today I have found real friends with an experience that impresses me so much and from whom I still have much to learn." (Khadra Mohamed, 2020-2021 mentor in Nursing at HES-SO Geneva)
