UNIGE is the only Swiss university with a centre for Armenian studies and research and one of only a handful of universities in Europe where students can study the ancient and modern Armenian language and literature from the Bachelor's to the PhD level. Studies are divided into two historical periods: ancient (from the 5th to the 18th century) and modern (19th and 20th centuries). Topics include historiography and the transfer of knowledge during the ancient and medieval periods, the literature of the diaspora and identity in exile, Soviet-era literature, apocryphal literature, the history of women, and the roots of Armenian Christianity and its links with Greek, Syriac and Latin Christianity.
