New research project SNF
The Platform has started a new research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) entitled:
Transboundary water cooperation between EU member States and third countries: governance resilience analysis and hydropolitical model-building
Research team
- Dr Mara Tignino, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law and Global Studies Institute, University of Geneva and Senior International Law Specialist, Platform for International Water Law, Geneva Water Hub.
- Dr Gábor Baranyai, Ludovika University of Public Service, Budapest, Hungary
- Prof. Lidija Tadic, Faculty of Civil Engineering, J.J. Strossmayer University, Osijek, Croatia.
Description of the project
Europe is home of a large number of international river basins and lakes. Until recently, transboundary waters in this continent were relatively well regulated, which helped avoid major conflicts over shared river basins. However, rapidly evolving impacts of climate change and other anthropogenic pressures are not only altering the hydrological map of transboundary water resources but are also creating new political dynamics in relations between riparian states. This research examines the stability of interstate relations on transboundary river basins shared between European Union (EU) and non-EU countries in light of new hydro-climatic conditions
The research project lasts four years from 2025 to 2029.
