The Limitation Initiative is harmful to education, research and innovation

The Swiss universities and organisations that support the promotion of research and innovation are opposed to the popular initiative “For moderate immigration”. The initiative jeopardises some of the basic parameters that favour Switzerland’s role as a centre for science and enterprise. Adopting the initiative would halt the free movement of persons and thus bring the research agreement with the EU to an end. In order to deliver outstanding performance, Switzerland’s education, research and innovation (ERI) sector relies on the free movement of persons and close cooperation with other countries.
The ETH Board, swissuniversities, the Swiss National Science Foundation, Innosuisse – the Swiss Innovation Agency, and the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences reject the Limitation Initiative. They have organised a joint press call in order to state their views on the Limitation Initiative and affirm the importance of research cooperation with Europe. Our Rector, Prof. Yves Flückiger was actively involved and presented the voice of swissuniversities from which he currently holds the position of President.

COVID

Complementing the special call on coronaviruses, 28 new coronavirus research projects are funded under NRP "COVID-19".New research has been launched to better control COVID-19. 18.6 million francs have been invested in projects that will investigate innovative solutions and develop public health recommendations.
Mandated by the Federal Council, the SNSF launched the National Research Programme "COVID-19" (NRP 78) on 30 April 2020 to advance our understanding of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), provide recommendations for clinical management and public health, and expedite the development of vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.

Record for the scheme project funding

Experienced researchers use the SNSF's project funding scheme to investigate self-chosen topics. They submitted 1032 applications in response to the first call of 2020.
The SNSF spends approximately half of its budget on project funding. In 2019, it awarded funding worth 531 million francs to 863 projects. Researchers can apply for this type of funding twice a year, in April and in October.
1032 applications in April 2020 confirm how important this scheme is for Swiss research. Whether in the humanities and social sciences, biology and medicine or mathematics, natural and engineering sciences: application numbers have hit a new high since 2016. That year, the SNSF had remodelled the funding scheme, for example by extending the maximum duration of a grant from three to four years.

EOSC

The European Open Science Cloud Association (EOSC Association) was established on 29 July 2020. This is a major step towards the implementation of EOSC. A strong cooperation between the Commission and the newly-founded EOSC Association can start now. This cooperation is expected to take the form of a co-programmed partnership between the Commission and the EOSC Association, in which Member States and countries associated to the Horizon Europe Framework Programme will be involved.

DMP

Like most of funding agencies, the SNSF now requires each new application to include a Data Management Plan (DMP) describing how research data will be generated, collected, documented, shared and preserved in the context of the submitted project.
The University's Research Data team offers various workshops to help researchers discover and use these DMPs.

German EU Council Presidency

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is organising a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) virtual conference in the context of the German EU Council Presidency.
A high-level panel in the studio in Berlin will discuss the main focus theme on synergies between the MSCA and the European University Alliances in interaction with the audience. The second focus theme, "Supervision in MSCA", will be discussed in four parallel virtual workshops.
The workshops will approach the subject matter from four different perspectives: on the one hand, supervision from the perspective of doctoral candidates and postdocs, on the other hand, supervision from the perspective of supervisors from academic and from non-academic institutions. The workshop’s findings are expected to result in recommendations for the future development of supervision in general and MSCA supervision in particular.
If you are interested in participating in the virtual MSCA Presidency conference and would like to be informed about the next steps, please send a short e-mail to MSCA2020@dlr.de to be added to the conference mailing list.
