Commission for Animal Research and Experiments (CARE)

The CARE Commission is an advisory body for animal research; it may be consulted for ethical, legal and organizational questions related to animal research. It was created by the University of Geneva (UNIGE) Rectorate on 2 October 2024 for a renewable term of five years.

Competencies

The CARE Commission:

•       contributes to drafting statements on animal research;  

•       advises on transparency and communication on animal research;

•       advises on disease prevention and protection of the health of personnel involved in animal research;

•       establishes the conditions for the monitoring of animal research conducted abroad;

•       regularly reviews the directives of the UNIGE 3R Award and appoints the evaluation committee;

•       proposes candidates to represent UNIGE in external committees related to animal research;

•       represents all UNIGE researchers conducting animal research.

CARE Commission Members

The CARE Commission comprises all those who represent UNIGE on committees related to animal research. In addition, the Commission appoints, if possible:

•       a representative from UNIGE research groups working at Campus Biotech;

•       a representative from UNIGE research groups working at AGORA;

•       two assistant professors from the Faculty of Science and three from the Faculty of Medicine conducting animal research or developing alternative methods;

•       an expert in bioethics.

 

At any time, the Commission may call on other members of the UNIGE scientific community. The Director of the Animal Research Office and the Animal Welfare Officer participate in CARE meetings without a vote.
