Research in the Department of Astronomy is described according to the Roadmap for Astronomy in Switzerland 2007-2016 in four main themes: Exoplanetary systems, Stars formation & evolution, Galaxies & Universe, Extreme Universe.

Key areas of astrophysics are present , taking into account a number of skills must be maintained since they are the Excellence of UNIGE-EPFL astronomy center.

Furthermore, research in astrophysics requires permanent connections between theoretical work (predictions and modeling) and observations for which the entire electromagnetic spectrum should be used (ground-based telescopes and space). Computer models play an essential role for proper and efficient astrophysical research progress.
